DIAMOND WIRE SAWING

Diamond Wire Sawing for Thick and Reinforced Concrete

A circular blade has a finite cutting depth. As concrete gets thicker, the blade may not be able to cut completely through the section from one side. Diamond wire sawing works differently. A continuous loop of diamond-impregnated wire is routed around or through the concrete section and pulled under controlled tension. This allows the wire to cut sections that are beyond the practical cutting depth of conventional blade saws.

What Slab Cutting Means on a Real Site

Slab cutting is cutting through a concrete floor slab to make an opening or to remove part of it. The slab may sit on the ground. It may be a suspended slab with beams under it. Both need a different plan.

A concrete slab is not just concrete. It holds steel bars inside it, and that steel is what makes it strong. So we use diamond concrete cutting on every job. The blade cuts the concrete and the steel at the same time, and the cut edge comes out straight and clean, so your new frame, pipe or stair fits without patch work.

What We Cut

Floor openings for stairs, lifts and hatches
Concrete slab openings for pipes, ducts and cables
Reinforced concrete slab cutting in structural floors
RCC slab cutting in podium and basement decks
Slab sections removed for renovation or demolition
Trimming and squaring off old, broken openings

If the wire can be safely routed around the section, it can be an effective solution for very thick and heavily reinforced concrete.

Need the right cutting method for your project?

For a standard door opening or a smaller straight cut in a normal wall, wall sawing may be faster and more economical. We assess the site and recommend the cutting method that fits the actual job.

SLAB CUTTING CONTRACTORS

Slab Cutting Contractors in Abu Dhabi

Most slab cutting contractors in Abu Dhabi hire the machine and the man from someone else. We do not. Since 2013 we have run our own diamond cutting equipment with our own crews. That means one company is responsible for the cut, the safety file and the finish. If something needs fixing, you call us, not a chain of three subcontractors.

REINFORCED CONCRETE SLAB CUTTING

Reinforced Concrete Slab Cutting and RCC Slabs

Most slabs in Abu Dhabi are RCC slabs. That means reinforced cement concrete — concrete with steel bars inside.

RCC slab cutting is harder than cutting plain concrete. The blade meets steel every few centimetres. That slows the cut and heats the blade. This is why we run water through the blade while it cuts. The water cools the diamond segments and keeps the concrete dust down at the same time.

Cutting a structural slab also changes how the floor carries weight. Before we cut a suspended slab, we ask for the structural engineer’s sign-off on the opening size and place. Where the opening needs temporary support, we install the propping before cutting and take it out once the engineer confirms it can come out.

We will not cut a structural slab opening without that sign-off. It protects your project and ours.

Structural Slab Cutting

Engineer sign-off is required before cutting a suspended structural slab. Where necessary, temporary propping is installed before the cut.

CUTTING METHOD

Slab Thickness and Which Method We Use

Not every slab needs the same machine. This is the usual picture on Abu Dhabi sites:

Slab Type
Usual Thickness
How We Cut It
01 Ground Floor Slab
150–200mm
Floor saw, single pass
02 Suspended Floor Slab
200–300mm
Floor saw, engineer sign-off first
03 Podium or Basement Deck
300–500mm
Cut from both faces where access allows
04 Raft or Heavy Industrial Slab
500mm and above
Wire sawing

Not sure how thick your slab is? Send a photo of an exposed edge or a stair void and we can usually tell.

SCAN BEFORE CUT
CONCRETE SCANNING

Concrete Scanning Before We Cut

We scan before we cut. Every time.

Inside a slab there can be live cables, water pipes, post-tension strands and heavy rebar. Cutting into any of these is expensive and dangerous. Our scanning shows what sits inside the slab so we can plan the cut around it.

If we find something we cannot cut through, we tell you before we start, not after. Sometimes the answer is to shift the opening by a few hundred millimetres. Sometimes the answer is a different method, like wire sawing or core cutting.

SLAB CUTTING APPLICATIONS

What People Use Slab Cutting For

Most of our slab cutting work in Abu Dhabi falls into these jobs:

01

MEP and Services

Slab cutting for plumbing lines. Slab cutting for electrical work and cable trays. Slab cutting for HVAC and duct installation. Cutting concrete floors for pipes going down to a lower level. Cutting slabs for utility installation on fit-out projects.

02

Drainage

Slab cutting for drainage runs and gully points. Ground floor slabs opened up, pipe laid, slab made good again.

03

Openings in the Structure

Floor opening cutting for new stairs. Slab cutting for lift installation and lift pit work. Hatch and riser openings. Door opening cutting and AC duct opening cutting in the walls nearby — see our wall sawing page.

04

Renovation and Demolition

Slab cutting for renovation where a floor level changes. Slab cutting for basement work. Slab modification where an old opening needs to grow. Floor removal and concrete removal in sections. For strip-out we cut the deck into pieces small enough to lift out, which is quieter and safer than breaking.

CLEAN & CONTROLLED CUTTING

Dust, Water and Working in Live Buildings

Many of our jobs are in buildings still being used — offices, malls, hotels, villas with people living in them.

Concrete dust is the main complaint on those sites, so we use water-cooled cutting and most of the dust turns into slurry instead of going into the air.

We sheet off the work area, bring vacuums and slurry control, and clean the floor before we leave.

No-water areas? Tell us at the enquiry stage so we can plan the right cutting and dust-control method.

OUR SLAB CUTTING PROCESS

How a Slab Cutting Job Runs

From the first photo to final clean-up, we plan the job around your site conditions and the work that needs to follow.

BEFORE WE ARRIVE

What We Need From Your Site

Have these ready and the crew gets straight to work:

Water

A tap or supply near the cut. If there is not one, tell us and we bring our own.

Power

Most jobs run on a 220V socket. Bigger slabs need a 415V three phase supply. Tell us what is available and we will match the machine to it.

Slurry

Somewhere for the water to drain, or tell us and we contain it and take it away.

Access

A route for the machine to reach the slab. Lifts, stairs and tight corners change the plan.

Clearance

The area emptied of furniture, stock or plant before we arrive.

Approvals

The engineer’s sign-off on any opening in a suspended slab.

If something is missing, say so early. We would rather plan around it than have the crew stood down at the gate.

FROM ENQUIRY TO CLEAN-UP

Six Steps From Start to Finish

01

You Send the Details

Location, slab thickness if you know it, opening size, and a photo. A photo saves everyone a site visit. Typical time to site: 24hr.

02

Site Visit and Risk Assessment

We look at access, power, water, and what sits above and below the slab. We write the risk assessment and method statement here.

03

Permits and Approvals

We help with the paperwork your main contractor or building owner needs.

04

Scanning and Marking

We scan the slab, mark the cut lines, and confirm them with you before the blade touches concrete.

05

Site Preparation and Cutting

We sheet off, set up water and dust control, and cut. Safety measures and PPE are standard, not extra.

06

Removal and Clean-Up

Cut sections are lifted out in a controlled way. We clear the debris and leave the area clean and ready for the next trade.

THE FINISHED RESULT

What You Get When We Finish

We leave a clean, square opening with straight edges. No cracked corners, no spalled concrete around the cut, and no rebar left sticking out where someone can catch on it.

We do not do the making good or the new floor finish. That stays with your main contractor. We hand over a clean opening ready for them to work to.

Debris goes with us unless you tell us otherwise. The area is swept before we leave.

Clean, Square Opening

Straight edges and accurately cut corners ready for the next stage of work.

Controlled Cut

No unnecessary impact damage, cracked corners or spalled concrete around the opening.

Clean Work Area

Cut debris is removed and the work area is swept before we leave.

Ready for the Next Trade

We hand over a clean opening ready for your main contractor to continue the work.

SLAB CUTTING COST

What Slab Cutting Costs

We price each job on its own. There is no fixed rate per metre, because every site and every slab has different requirements.

01

Slab Thickness & Reinforcement

Slab thickness and how much steel is inside affect the cutting method and time required.

02

Total Cut Length

Pricing is based on the total length of cut, not just the size of the opening.

03

Access to the Slab

A basement with restricted access can require more planning than a straightforward ground-floor job.

04

Day or Night Work

Working hours can affect the crew, access and overall requirements of the job.

05

Water Access

If suitable water is not available on site, we can bring our own supply and equipment.

06

Removal & Disposal

Whether cut sections need to be removed and taken away also affects the final scope.

Slab Cutting FAQs

Yes. Almost every slab we cut is reinforced. Our diamond blades are made to cut through concrete and steel bars together.

Wire sawing does not have the same practical blade-depth limitation as a conventional circular saw. The practical cutting range depends on whether the wire can be safely routed around the section, along with access, equipment setup, structural conditions and the required removal method.

Yes. Diamond wire systems can cut through reinforced concrete, including concrete containing substantial steel reinforcement. The reinforcement and structural conditions should be assessed before cutting, particularly when working on load-bearing or post-tensioned structures.

For slabs thicker than a floor saw can reach, we cut from both faces where access allows, or switch to wire sawing.

It can, which is why we ask for structural engineer sign-off before cutting any suspended slab. Where the opening needs temporary support, we install the propping ourselves and remove it when the engineer says it can come out.

We scan the slab first. Scanning shows rebar, conduits and pipes so we can plan the cut around them.

Very little. We cut with water, which turns most of the concrete dust into slurry. We also sheet off the area and vacuum before we leave.

Yes. A lot of our commercial slab cutting in Abu Dhabi runs at night so the space is usable in the morning.

Yes, if you want us to. Tell us at quote stage so we include it.
