What AC duct cutting means
People search for this term and mean two different things, so let us be clear.
Some people want their ducts cleaned or resized. That is AC maintenance work. We do not do that.
What we do is cut the hole in the concrete that the duct goes through.
AC ducts are big. They are usually square or rectangular. And they often have to pass through a concrete wall or a floor slab to get where they need to go. You cannot break that hole out with a hammer. You will damage the structure, make a mess of the edges, and lose days you do not have.
So we cut it properly. Clean edges, right size, right place.
Where we cut AC duct openings
We cut openings through the concrete structures your duct route needs to pass through.
Concrete walls
Block walls, reinforced concrete, shear walls. We cut the opening to the size on your drawing, with room left for flanges and fire wrap.
Floor slabs and roof slabs
Openings for duct risers and vertical drops. Slabs need more care because there is load sitting above and below the cut.
Ceilings and soffits
Overhead openings for supply and return ducts running in the ceiling void.
Beams and downstands
Sometimes a duct route runs straight into a beam. We do cut these. But a beam is not a wall, so this one always goes to the structural engineer first. No exceptions.
Plant rooms and basements
Thick walls, heavy steel inside, and never much room to work. This is where duct openings usually go wrong. It is also where the right cutting method matters most.
What we do and what we do not
Saying this clearly saves everyone a phone call.
We do
Cut AC duct openings in concrete walls, slabs, soffits and beams
Scan the concrete for steel and live services before we cut
Cut to the exact size and level on your MEP drawing
Break out and remove the concrete from the opening
Put in temporary props before cutting a slab, and take them out after
Clean up the edges so the opening is ready for your duct
We do not
Supply or fit the ductwork
Clean, seal or resize ducts
Do AC commissioning or balancing
Seal or fire-stop around the duct once it is in
How we cut an AC duct opening
Every opening follows a controlled process from the drawing through to a clean handover.
We read the drawing
Not just the opening size. We want to know the wall or slab thickness and what sits on the other side. Most duct opening problems start because nobody checked the far side.
We scan the concrete
Steel bars, post-tension cables, conduit, buried pipes. AC duct openings are large, so the chance of hitting something is high. We scan every structural opening before we cut. If you need scanning on its own, we do concrete scanning as a separate service.
We mark it and get it signed off
The opening gets marked on the concrete. Your engineer confirms it before a blade touches anything. Once concrete is cut, it stays cut.
We pick the method
Wall saw, wire saw, or both together. It depends on the thickness, the access, and how much room we have around the opening.
We prop, cut and remove
Slab openings get propped first. Big openings come out in pieces so we can lift or lower each one safely instead of dropping it.
We clean up
Slurry contained. Debris cleared. Edges tidy. We leave the opening ready for your installer, not ready for another clean-up crew.
The methods we use
There is no one method that suits every wall.
Wall sawing
Wall sawing handles most duct openings in walls. It is fast, the cut is square, and the edges come out clean enough to fit a duct straight to. More on our wall sawing page.
Wire sawing
Wire sawing is for the hard ones. Very thick walls, heavy steel inside, or spots where a saw blade will not fit. Wire will cut through almost anything.
Slab sawing
Slab sawing is for openings in floor slabs. If the opening is part of a bigger structural change, that becomes a slab cutting job.
Core drilling
Core drilling is for round holes. If your route also needs circular holes for pipes or small services, that is core cutting work.
Working in buildings that are still open
A lot of AC duct cutting in Abu Dhabi is retrofit work. Offices, hotels, malls and villas that are still running while the AC gets upgraded.
Night and weekend shifts
Night and weekend shifts when noise rules out daytime cutting
Water and slurry control
Water and slurry control so nothing runs onto a finished floor or through a ceiling
Dust extraction
Dust extraction on any cut near people
Protection
Protection laid down around the work area before we start
Cutting in sections
Cutting in sections so pieces come out under control
If the building cannot shut down, tell us before we quote. It changes the method and the timing, and we would rather know up front.
Power on site
Our machines run on a mix of supplies. Most wall openings run on standard 220V single phase. Bigger slab work and thick walls need 415V three phase.

Generator Rental
If there is nothing there, we bring what we need. We also do generator rental if the site has no supply at all.

We take the structure seriously
An AC duct opening is a hole in something that holds a building up. The bigger the duct, the bigger the hole, and the more it matters.
We will not cut a structural opening without engineer approval. If a request looks wrong to us, we will say so before we start, not after.
Engineer Approval
We will not cut a structural opening without engineer approval.
Props Before Cutting
On slab openings we put props in before we cut and take them out once the opening is finished.
Included as Standard
Propping is included, not an extra, when the job requires it.
Safety Comes First
We would rather turn a job down than drop a slab.
